[ Erik would be something nonchalant if not for the way he stands just beyond the front steps, arms crossed over his chest, gaze slanted at Agent MacTaggert. Her departing pleasantries are more directed at Charles, because Erik very clearly excudes distrust, and even distaste, to any of the Suits. But that doesn't mean his presence is not very much there. The conversation through the night weights itself down at the back of his mind. Too many people are showing an interest now, invasive little questions that get passed off as pleasantries from someone Charles trusts.

Erik sometimes wonders if Charles would just let the government steamroll right on other him. He hopes MacTaggert knows Erik won't allow that as long as he's here.

He tips his head a fraction in acknowledgement of her goodbyes, lifts his gaze skyward slightly, because there's something ticking away in the house tonight, a static kind of unease that crawls under his skin. It's a bit like the dark roll of sky just before a storm as dark eyes follow the movement of the man in front of him. ] Well?

[ Shrugging uselessly. ] I can't tell you anything but what I believe.

[ Struggling for something other than his ideals to justify it. Quietly. ] I don't want you to have more regrets weighing. And to me, this is the way it happens.

Because you have something to protect now, and the repercussions can affect those bonds. [ Turning his glass around, he bites his tongue. If they make it past this, Charles would need to pick up the pieces, whether Erik would be there or not. ]

[ Gaze sharp while he searches Charles' face. ] You've known for a long time what I've set out to do. No matter what happens in the interim, I will stop him. If you can't accept that, then I am sorry, but I won't change my mind.

[ Eyes going hard as stone. ] I am not going to stand aside so your disregard for collateral damage can indiscriminately lash out at men who've done you no harm. You've said you're not blinded by what he's done, but that makes it worse - you'd premeditate deaths of those who've done nothing to you. That isn't vengeance. That is a dangerous precedent to take, my friend.

[ Drawing a hand over his eyes. ] Why are you so under the assumption that I am a good person? My terms have been clear from the very beginning. People will survive as long as they stay out of my way.

Whether you like it or not, war is on the horizon. I would rather not stay blind to it.

Because you are, you're better than this. [ Anger sparks at the gesture, like Erik has learned nothing of Charles' faith. ] I've known for a long time what you intend for him, but don't pretend that you're not giving yourself free reign to defend yourself from people who have no way of hurting you. They have guns, Erik, you can do the math.

This is a battle ground, but you don't have to kill them Erik, is that so hard to understand? You have so much power, but what good is it if you prove you can't use it for anything but violence? What future can you build?

[ Arching a cool eyebrow. ] I am not out to level the playing feild, if that's what you're implying. But you have to open your eyes, hoping blindly for a war without bloodshed will get us nowhere. I'm sorry Charles, but I am preparing for when the tide turns against us.

[ Altogether too mired in self righteousness to blunt his earnestness. ] I'm not hoping blindly, I'm saying we can control the terms and prevent it. Subvert Shaw's actions while stoppin gloss of life and our battle is won for us.

[ Slowly. ] If only it were that easy.

[ In lieu of response, Charles nudges a rook into place. Dull. ] Check.

[ All that affection from earlier has drained, leaving Erik tired and carefully fitting blocks back into his walls, dispassionate with every movement. ]

[ Only halfheartedly listening to the record, much of the fight has gone from him, looking more sad and grossly out of his depth than he's been in a very long time. Several attempts at speech are made before he finds something true, keeping his gaze on the board. ] I won't stop you unless you give me no choice. But I will do anything to protect your life as well. Whatever my morals.

Then I'm sorry. [ Not looking up. ] Loving me appears to cost you dearly.

I can change nothing that you don't want me to, and nothing can make me take you for anything than what you are. Cost is meaningless if that's what it takes. [ The important thing for him is to not give in to the urge to bury his face in his hands, to choke and not give voice to the This isn't going to work that so wants to be heard. ]

Once again he's an instrument of destruction. It's not lost on him. ] If I were wise, I shouldn't let you choose. Me or your ideals. They shouldn't even be in question.

[ A short, violent shake of his head. The very thought of it is utterly repellant, barring the impossibility of how he'd ever manage to do it. He'd have to be the walking dead to live without the depth of his compassion driving him, defining his existence, and hopelessly tangled with the bond he has with Erik. Erik would be alone again, and that is unforgivable. ] I can't.

And what if became no longer your choice? [ Erik may give the image of being unfeeling, of a cruel lack of care, but there is a violence of feelign he fights against, drives down to get his words across. ] I could leave you now, I could go tonight. It would hurt, but you would be freed from choosing me or the thing you've cradled all your years. You would be absolved from it.

It doesn't mean we can't - [ When did this evening become a platform for his dismissal? Charles rages against the torrent of alarm and the cold façade Erik has constructed, all his feckless charm and talent for persuasion discarded for pleading, looking anywhere but at him. ] Stop. Don't you dare pretend that you could walk away and say that it's best for me. I don't want to be blameless, I want you.

And I want you alive. [ His words are firecracker sharp, bitten out angrily. ] I want you safe, Charles. You won't be by my side, you won't retain everything that makes you you.

[ Abandoning his drink, his chess pieces, expression careful. ] You love me, I am aware of that, but sometimes love can become a blindfold.

[ Vehemently ignoring him. ] We're stronger together. With or without you, I'm going to be there and the children are going to be there and we're putting an end to this, so I suggest you cease insisting I'll be safer if you go now.

Charles - [ Erik sighs, eyes flickering closed for a moment. ] This will only destroy us.

[ He shakes his head again, throat tight. ] You need it, too.
